Letha J. MacLachlan, Q.C. is a Calgary based lawyer who, together with specialists retained as needed, brings a balanced, comprehensive and strategic approach to resource issues. Ms. MacLachlan has a background in community development and extensive experience in northern aboriginal land claims, environmental law and resource regulation throughout Canada. She has lived in and continues to work in the territories of northern Canada and has worked across the country with aboriginal peoples, industry, governments, regulators, and environmental organizations, in the context of resource extraction and regulation.

From time to time Ms. MacLachlan has complemented her law practice with appointments to membership on regulatory tribunals. In January 2001, by appointment from the Governor-General-in-Council, Ms. MacLachlan sat for a three year term as a permanent member of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Canada's federal regulator of all uranium mines, nuclear power generating stations and facilities handling nuclear materials and radioactive waste.

From 1994 to 1996 she chaired the federal Environmental Assessment Review Panel that reviewed the BHP Diamonds Project to construct and operate Canada's first diamond mine near Lac de Gras, in the Northwest Territories. During the years of residency in the Northwest Territories, Letha MacLachlan was a member of the Task Force on National Parks and the NWT Water Board, and was chair of two separate public inquiries on Workers' Compensation in the Northwest Territories.

Ms. MacLachlan has retained her ties with academia. In 2002, she was a member of the thesis defence committee for a multi-disciplinary Ph.D thesis on Water Export for the Faculty of Environmental Design, University of Calgary. In 2003 she co-taught a course on environmental law at the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary. She has also served as a member of dispute resolution boards established under aboriginal claim agreements.
